PANGKALPINANG – As a company that grows and develops alongside the community, PT Timah remains committed to supporting the social and economic development of communities surrounding its mining areas through its Environmental Social Responsibility (TJSL) program.
One of PT Timah’s key efforts is empowering community groups to become self-reliant and improve their livelihoods by utilizing local potential.
In the Riau Islands Province, PT Timah has supported the development of Pokdakan Tuah Bersatu, a community fishery group focused on white snapper aquaculture, as a means to enhance the welfare of local fishermen.
Amran, the head of Pokdakan Tuah Bersatu, shared that their group has continued to grow under PT Timah’s guidance and has even inspired the formation of other community groups. “Our collaboration with PT Timah began in 2023. PT Timah has been assisting and mentoring us in developing white snapper aquaculture, which has provided us with an alternative livelihood besides fishing,” said Amran.
He explained that in addition to support, they also received training in aquaculture to help them achieve better results. “Thanks to this white snapper farming initiative, we now have an additional income source. We’ve already started harvesting and selling our fish,” he added.
With notable success in aquaculture, they have since expanded their initiatives by forming a hydroponic farming group with local women under the name Lanjut Bestari, aimed at vegetable cultivation to meet food needs.
They also established a shrimp paste processing group to make use of the fishermen’s catch.“It all started with our fishery group, and then we created a hydroponic group for women and a shrimp paste processing group. We are truly grateful for PT Timah’s guidance and support, which has helped improve our economy. The women, who were previously housewives, can now grow vegetables. Thank you, PT Timah, for caring about our area in Sawang Laut,” said Amran.
Additionally, he mentioned that PT Timah often provides social assistance to the community, such as fishing equipment and other forms of aid. “Alhamdulillah, we as a community have felt many benefits from PT Timah’s support and mentoring. Their support has helped us both economically and socially. We hope PT Timah continues to thrive,” he concluded. (*)
