PANGKALPINANG -- The mining industry plays an important role in maintaining the balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. In line with this, PT Timah remains committed to sustainable environmental management.
As a leading tin mining company, PT Timah has been placing even greater focus on sustainable environmental management. These efforts aim not only to protect ecosystems but also to ensure the sustainability of the company's operations in the future.
By adopting sustainable practices, PT Timah carries out various environmental management programs, including land and marine reclamation, reforestation, seawater quality monitoring, energy efficiency, support for the net zero emission program, and biodiversity conservation.
As a member of the Indonesian Mining Industry Holding, MIND ID, PT Timah conducts both land and marine reclamation. Land reclamation is carried out through revegetation and other forms of reclamation. Between 2015 and 2024, PT Timah has reclaimed 3,222.28 hectares of former mining land in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province.
Marine reclamation efforts include the deployment of fish shelters, artificial reefs, coral transplantation, erosion barriers, mangrove planting, and restocking of squid and mangrove crabs, all conducted in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. Between 2016 and 2024, the company deployed 1,475 coral transplant units, 3,105 fish shelters, 7,680 artificial reefs, and restocked 40,435 squid.
Marine reclamation has also been carried out in the Riau Islands Province, including the installation of 2,360 meters of erosion barriers, the planting of 12.81 hectares of mangroves, and the restocking of 3,800 crabs between 2017 and 2024.
In the first quarter of 2025, PT Timah also achieved a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 32,844 tons of CO2e, from a target of 131,271 tons of CO2e for the year.
PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that the company remains committed to implementing good mining practices in its business processes.
“Implementing sustainable environmental management is not just about meeting regulations, but it is a shared commitment to contributing to ecosystem restoration,” said Anggi.
In addition to its reclamation programs, PT Timah also actively supports greening initiatives through planting programs in collaboration with local governments, law enforcement agencies, and community groups.
PT Timah’s environmental management efforts have also yielded positive results. In recent years, the company has received Gold and Green PROPER Awards from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
