From Reclamation to Mangroves, PT Timah Tbk Drives Sustainable Environmental Recovery

PANGKALPINANG -- PT Timah Tbk continues to strengthen its commitment to implementing sustainable environmental management through various programs, ranging from land reclamation and marine ecosystem rehabilitation to mangrove planting in the company’s operational areas.

PT Timah Tbk’s commitment to sustainable environmental management is part of the company’s responsibility to minimize the impact of mining activities while restoring ecological functions in post-mining areas.

In managing land environments, PT Timah Tbk consistently carries out post-mining land reclamation using a sustainable approach. Former mining areas are reclaimed through land contouring and the planting of various types of productive crops, forestry plants, and local vegetation.

These reclamation programs aim not only to restore environmental conditions but also to encourage the productive use of post-mining land for activities such as agriculture, fisheries, and plantations that can benefit surrounding communities.

Some examples of land reclamation initiatives implemented by PT Timah Tbk include Kampoeng Reklamasi Air Jangkang and Kampong Reklamasi Selingsing, where former mining land has been transformed into edu-ecotourism areas.

In 2025, PT Timah Tbk reclaimed hundreds of hectares of post-mining land across its operational areas.

In addition to land-based efforts, PT Timah Tbk is also actively involved in the reclamation and rehabilitation of marine ecosystems. The company implements various coastal environmental recovery programs, including the deployment of artificial reefs, restocking of squid and mangrove crabs, and mangrove planting.

These initiatives aim to restore marine ecosystem functions, increase fish populations, and support the sustainability of fishermen’s livelihoods around the company’s operational areas.

As of the third quarter of 2025, PT Timah Tbk had deployed a total of 1,920 artificial reef units. The company has also restocked 1,000 mangrove crabs and thousands of squid.

As part of its commitment to protecting coastal ecosystems, PT Timah Tbk regularly carries out mangrove planting in various coastal areas. Mangroves play an important role in preventing coastal erosion, maintaining water quality, and serving as natural habitats for a wide range of marine species.

These mangrove planting activities are conducted in collaboration with local governments, communities, environmental groups, and other stakeholders, ensuring that the benefits are widely shared and sustainable.

Anggi Siahaan, Department Head of Corporate Communication at PT Timah Tbk, said that the company is committed to implementing sustainable environmental management in line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

“PT Timah Tbk implements sustainable environmental management, including reclamation efforts carried out both on land and at sea. These reclamation programs are implemented on an ongoing basis and involve local communities,” he said.

Community involvement in reclamation activities is a form of environment-based economic empowerment, such as agroforestry and ecotourism initiatives carried out at Kampoeng Reklamasi Selinsing in collaboration with Selinsing Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes).

Through land and marine reclamation as well as mangrove conservation, PT Timah Tbk strives to balance its operational activities with environmental preservation, while also creating added value for communities and future generations. (*)
