From Land to Sea, PT TIMAH’s Efforts to Protect the Earth Through Environmental Programs

PANGKALPINANG -- PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving the environment through various sustainable environmental management programs.

These efforts are an essential part of ensuring a balance between the company’s business processes and ecosystem preservation, particularly within PT TIMAH’s operational areas.

A range of programs has been implemented, including land reclamation through planting and reforestation activities carried out sustainably in collaboration with local communities and the government.

PT TIMAH also conducts marine environmental management programs. Through its marine reclamation initiatives, the company implements artificial reef programs, restocking of marine life such as squid and mangrove crabs, mangrove planting, and the construction of coastal protection structures to prevent shoreline erosion.

These initiatives are not only aimed at restoring post-mining environmental conditions but also at providing long-term benefits for communities, especially those living in coastal areas.

In addition, the company has undertaken several initiatives to strengthen energy management in its business processes. These efforts are part of the company’s strategy to support energy transition and reduce carbon emissions.

The initiatives include selective mining, energy efficiency measures, substitution of fossil fuels with renewable energy, electrification at the Mentok site, solar photovoltaic implementation, and the replacement of fluorescent lamps with LED lighting.

PT TIMAH’s environmental management programs are also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as climate change mitigation and ecosystem rehabilitation.

Academician and Chairman of the Sayang Babel Kite Foundation, Indra Ambalika, stated that the company’s environmental management efforts are a strategic step in maintaining environmental balance.

According to him, the exploitation of natural resources must be balanced with rehabilitation efforts to avoid disparities between economic and ecological values.

“The utilization of natural resources remains important for supporting the economy, but it must be accompanied by efforts to maintain and improve environmental quality,” he said.

He added that the company’s marine rehabilitation programs are well-targeted and have the potential to serve as a model for others in managing coastal environments.

Meanwhile, the Head of West Kundur District, Yusufian, noted that the company’s environmental programs have delivered tangible benefits to the community. One example is the construction of wave barriers, which help reduce coastal erosion and protect residents’ land.

“The benefits are strongly felt by the community, especially in safeguarding coastal areas and preventing erosion,” he said.

Through these various programs, PT TIMAH reaffirms its commitment to implementing environmentally responsible mining practices and contributing to the sustainability of the planet for future generations. (*)
