Exploring the Impact of Tin Mining in Kundur, MediaMIND Finalists Witness PT TIMAH's Production and Environmental Initiatives

KARIMUN -- The roar of Production Suction Dredger (KIP) engines greeted the MediaMIND finalists as they visited PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk's operational area in Kundur on Thursday (October 23, 2026). Aboard KIP 88 and KIP 20, the journalists observed offshore tin mining activities firsthand and learned about the tin ore production process.

Accompanied by Zulfikar from PT TIMAH's Offshore Mining Department in the Kundur Area, participants gained insights into the various stages of mining operations and the management of offshore mining areas. They then observed tin ore processing and refining operations in the Kundur Area, complementing their previous visit to PT Timah Industri, where they learned about downstream processing activities.

Beyond learning about production processes, the finalists also witnessed PT TIMAH's environmental management and community empowerment initiatives. These included offshore reclamation, mangrove planting, the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), assistance for farmer groups, and the construction of coastal retaining walls to help reduce the risk of erosion.

One of the finalists, Yosep Indra Praja from RMOL Sumsel, said the visit provided a broader perspective on the implementation of good mining practices at PT TIMAH.

"PT TIMAH's implementation of good mining practices demonstrates that responsible mining is not limited to extraction activities but encompasses the entire business process, from upstream to downstream operations," he said.

Yosep also highlighted the potential development of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) as a strategic opportunity for the future of the tin industry.

Another perspective came from Wishnu Bagus Prasetyo of Investortrust.id, who noted that PT TIMAH's environmental and community empowerment programs provide benefits to surrounding communities.

He also expressed interest in local village governments' perspectives on how their areas have changed before and during mining operations, as well as community expectations for the future of their regions once mining activities have ended.

Meanwhile, MIND ID's Head of Institutional Relations, Selly Adriatika, explained that MediaMIND was designed not only as a journalism competition but also as a learning platform for journalists to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the mining industry and its role in supporting national development.

"Through this initiative, we aim to provide journalists with broader opportunities to observe firsthand how mining operations are conducted, how downstream processing is carried out, and how companies strive to deliver benefits to local communities and regions," she said.

As part of the final round, participants will visit several operational areas of MIND ID Group members, including PT TIMAH Tbk's operational sites in the Riau Islands.

Through the MediaMIND site visit, PT TIMAH demonstrated its commitment to providing journalists with opportunities to gain a closer understanding of the company's business operations while witnessing its efforts to implement responsible mining practices.

More than just a field visit, the experience offered participants a deeper understanding that the tin industry's journey is not solely about producing commodities, but also about managing natural resources responsibly, creating added value, and delivering benefits to communities and the national economy.
