Expanding the Mangrove Crab Population in Karimun, PT Timah Returns to Release Hundreds of Mangrove Crab Tail Lips on Karimun Island

PONGKAR – To increase the population of mangrove crabs on Karimun Island, PT Timah Tbk again released hundreds of mangrove crab seeds on one of the islands in Karimun, Thursday (31/3/2022).

Previously, PT Timah Tbk had also released 600 crab seeds in Kudur Beach, where this program will continue as a form of sea reclamation carried out by this TINS ??coded issuer.

This effort to release crab seeds is a step taken by PT Timah Tbk to minimize the impact of the decline in the mangrove crab population. In addition, with more and more mud crabs, it is expected to have an economic impact on the community.

The release of mangrove crabs also involves the fishing community, so that later it is expected to optimize the catch of fishermen for mangrove crab commodities.

Fisherman from Pongkar Azwan Village, said that currently the mangrove crab population in the area has decreased and can almost be said to be non-existent.

"Alhamdulillah, PT Timah has carried out crab distribution activities in this location and I as a fisherman are very happy," he said.

One of the mangrove crab cultivators, Erwin, said that his party supports efforts to increase the mangrove crab population by releasing seeds into the sea. In this way, he said, in the future, Karimun Regency could become a center for mangrove crabs.

Not only that, according to him, mangrove crabs also have high economic value and are quite attractive. In fact, mangrove crabs are one of the export commodities that have a market share to Malaysia and Singapore.

"As a cultivator, I am very happy with the activities carried out by PT Timah, and do not feel competitive. I hope that many Karimun people cultivate crabs. Because the market share in Singapore and Malaysia is wide open. For that we must be able to take advantage of existing opportunities," he said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Tebing sub-district, Muchtisar, who participated in the release of crab seeds, was happy and grateful to PT Timah, who has a very high concern for the environment.

"For example, currently we are releasing hundreds of mangrove crab seeds, it is hoped that in the future these crabs will develop well which will certainly have an impact on fishermen," he said.
