PANGKALPINANG -- Cooperatives continue to play a crucial role in supporting community economies. In line with this, PT Timah has actively involved cooperatives as business partners as part of its commitment to promoting inclusive economic growth.
PT Timah’s support for cooperative development has been ongoing for years. The company engages cooperatives to support its business processes, aiming to empower them into productive and highly competitive entities.
One form of this tangible support includes partnerships with cooperatives across PT Timah’s operational areas. These collaborations span from the procurement of local goods and services to mining service operations and post-mining reclamation efforts.
PT Timah’s efforts align with the government’s directive to reform cooperatives into modern, professional institutions that can adapt to market demands. The synergy between business sectors and local cooperatives is expected to create a resilient and sustainable economic ecosystem.
PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that the company’s role in supporting cooperatives not only strengthens the local economic structure but also contributes to community resilience, especially amidst global and national economic uncertainties.
“Cooperatives are not just economic institutions; they are also platforms for community collaboration. Strengthening cooperatives means boosting the grassroots economy and promoting equitable prosperity,” Anggi said.
One of PT Timah’s partner cooperatives is the Timah Employees Cooperative Service (KJKTMM), established in 1994 and still actively operating today. Initiated by PT Timah employees, the cooperative was founded to develop the economic potential of its members and the surrounding community to improve overall welfare.
“The establishment of this cooperative was largely supported by PT Timah, and to this day, KJKTMM remains a partner of the company, supporting cooperative ventures such as mining services and reclamation,” said Fery Gunawan, Chairman of KJKTMM.
Similarly, the Timah Retirees Service Cooperative (KJPPS), founded in 2019, has also become a PT Timah partner. KJPPS has experienced steady growth, reflected in increased annual profits and the ability to acquire its own office space. The cooperative also works with PT Timah as a supplier of goods and services.
KJPPS Chairman, Fakhrizal Abubakar, stated that the cooperative’s development has been significantly influenced by PT Timah’s support. According to him, the company’s involvement has had a direct economic impact on the cooperative’s members and the wider community.
“PT Timah’s role is fundamental — they are our mentor. Our members are mostly PT Timah retirees, and our goods and services business depends heavily on PT Timah. Without them, KJPPS would not be where it is today,” he said.
Looking ahead, Fakhrizal hopes PT Timah will continue to guide and collaborate with the cooperative in various company activities.
With a spirit of collaboration and a strong focus on people-centered economic development, PT Timah hopes cooperatives will continue to grow into resilient, independent entities that actively contribute to regional economic advancement. (*)
