PANGKALPINANG – PT Timah upholds the values of diversity and inclusivity, fostering an inclusive work environment that supports various community groups, including persons with disabilities.
Through its CSR and Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs, PT Timah actively involves persons with disabilities in various initiatives. As a state-representing tin mining company and a MIND ID’s Mining Industry Holding member, PT Timah has contributed significantly to empowerment programs, protection, and fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities.
The company’s initiatives for persons with disabilities span education, economic empowerment, social protection, and the provision of assistive devices such as wheelchairs.
In the education sector, PT Timah has long supported activities at the Pangkalpinang YPAC Foundation, a formal school for people with disabilities. Beyond operational support for the foundation, the company frequently organizes activities to enhance the skills and independence of people with disabilities.
Recently, PT Timah collaborated with Rumah Indira Human Potential Development Consultants to host a workshop titled “Educating Children with Special Needs to Become Independent and Valuable Individuals” in Pangkalpinang and East Belitung. The workshop received enthusiastic participation from parents and educators of children with special needs.
As part of its commitment, PT Timah ensures that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to access education.
To further enhance the skills, competencies, and economic development of persons with disabilities, PT Timah has implemented the PT Timah Difabel Entrepreneur School Program in collaboration with SLB Negeri Mentok in West Bangka.
Through this program, students from SLB Mentok receive training in batik-making and beverage production under the guidance of professional instructors at their school.
PT Timah provides essential tools and materials to support batik-making and beverage-related MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises). For batik-making, the company offers tools such as batik frames and stamps, while for beverage production, it supplies blenders, sealers, and juicers.
Arief Jananto, Principal of SLB Negeri Mentok, explained that their school, in partnership with PT Timah, trains students with disabilities in both batik-making and beverage entrepreneurship.
“PT Timah collaborates with our school to train students in two skills: batik-making and beverage entrepreneurship. This initiative has expanded the variety of batik patterns produced by our students with disabilities,” he said.
Currently, more than a dozen students are learning batik-making. Arief hopes that these skills will help them grow and become independent. With PT Timah’s support, SLB Negeri Mentok has successfully increased its batik production.
“We’ve made progress. Initially, we had around three patterns, but now we’ve developed more, including motifs such as Malay dance, Wisma Ranggam, Mentilin, and PT Timah’s logo,” he explained.
Arief hopes that PT Timah will continue to collaborate with their school to enhance the skills of their students with disabilities.
“We hope this collaboration will extend to other aspects and additional skills. We rely on support from the business and industrial sectors,” he added.
Meanwhile, Anggi Siahaan, Department Head of Corporate Communication at PT Timah, stated that the company continuously runs community development and empowerment programs to benefit the community, particularly targeting persons with disabilities.
“The company plays a role in helping persons with disabilities gain access to education, economic opportunities, and social protection. PT Timah is committed to demonstrating care for persons with disabilities through its social responsibility programs,” he said. (*)
