Cultural Transformation in OHS: PT Timah’s Commitment to Implement Mining Safety Management and OHS Management Systems

PANGKALPINANG – As one of the leading tin mining companies, PT Timah remains committed to implementing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in all of its operational activities.

The strict application of OHS standards is a priority for PT Timah to ensure that all production processes and operational activities are conducted safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.

The company continues to innovate and improve its OHS management system to align with technological advancements and operational needs, with a focus on the pillars of Workplace Safety and Occupational Health.

PT Timah is also committed to implementing the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP) and the OHS Management System (SMK3). Both SMKP and SMK3 are implemented by national and international standards and guidelines. All OHS management systems are certified and have been audited by external parties.

The scope of SMKP implementation involves all staff, organic employees, support staff, and partners involved in product sales/logistics activities, acting as part of the product distribution chain.

Meanwhile, the scope of SMK3 implementation covers all activities of the mining and operational entities, as well as all employees involved, including field operators, partner workers, and visiting guests to the operational areas.

The OHS policies in the company's work environment include adherence to regulations, identifying and controlling Occupational Health and Safety and Operational Safety aspects, establishing a Mining Safety Committee/P2K3, the obligation for employees to participate in audits, OHS monitoring and inspections, active participation in regular OHS training, enhancing employee competencies, and fostering an OHS culture.

“The company regularly conducts internal and external audits on the performance of OHS implementation. The audit process is carried out to ensure the quality of the OHS management system,” said PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan.

To strengthen the safety culture in the workplace, PT Timah consistently holds training programs and workshops related to OHS. These trainings equip participants with knowledge about potential risks in the workplace and how to prevent them.

In recent years, PT Timah has also transformed its OHS Culture as part of adapting the management of the OHS Culture to the company's business processes. Previously, PT Timah had the Mucak K3 and 5R Culture programs. Now, the company has the SAFETINS 5R program.

The SAFETINS 5R program aims to build awareness and discipline in safe working behaviors by prioritizing safety through the implementation of safety protocols and the 5R culture as a preventive measure against accidents and to increase company productivity.

PT Timah also encourages all employees to actively participate in maintaining safety and health in the workplace. The company has implemented a reporting system that allows employees to directly report potential hazards or OHS violations to management without fear of repercussions.

"This approach aims to create an inclusive safety culture where all parties are involved in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment," Anggi added. (*)
