Cultivating Suction Snails, Pokdakan Progresses Together with Sawang Laut Village and PT Timah Tbk Harvests Tens of Kilograms of Suction Snails

SAWANG LAUT -- Pokdakan Maju Bersama succeeded in harvesting the first sucker snails from the results of sucker snail cultivation carried out together with PT Timah Tbk. They can harvest tens of kilograms of sucker snails.

The suction snail cultivation program is one of PT Timah Tbk's efforts to stimulate the community's economy based on local potential.

PT Timah Tbk helps sucker snail seeds and develops Pokdakan Maju Bersama to cultivate sucker snails. It is hoped that with this snail cultivation program, Pokdakan Maju Bersama can develop cultivation so that it can be economically independent.

Chairman of Pokdakan Maju Bersama, Sawang Laut Village District, West Kundur Zulkifli said that in this first harvest, not all the snails had been harvested.

They started cultivating these suction snails last June and have experienced the success of this cultivation program in their first harvest.

"This first harvest is around 20 kilos, which is still more. But we are trying to limit it first so that development is maintained well. We are already happy and grateful because this can be said to be successful," he said.

They are grateful because with the support and assistance from PT Timah Tbk, they can carry out suction snail cultivation and it has become a new economic source for them.

"Thank God, we are grateful that with the assistance and guidance of PT Timah Tbk, we have been able to harvest and experience our hard work. Hopefully, in the future we can continue to grow," he said.

According to him, marketing the suction snails themselves has competitive prospects because many local people are ready to buy the suction snails they cultivate.

"I, along with 10 members, feel happy and grateful to have been invited by PT Timah and to be directly involved in cultivating sucker snails. This program is very suitable for cultivation in locations around Batu Tuan Beach. Apart from being a suitable location, cultivating is also easy," he said.

Zulkifli said that people around Kundur Barat District are very happy to consume sucked snails because the price is affordable and it is also easy to prepare various foods, sucked snails are a mandatory ingredient in a typical Malay meal called Lendot.

"Thank you to PT Timah for creating this suction snail rearing program, of course, this will really help improve our economy as traditional fishermen," he said. (*)
