BANGKA TENGAH – In celebration of the 74th anniversary of Polairud, Polairud Polda Bangka Belitung collaborated with PT Timah to carry out coral reef transplantation as part of their efforts to restore and rehabilitate the marine ecosystem in the waters of Pulau Panjang, Central Bangka Regency, on Tuesday (19/11/2024).
The event was attended by the Director of Polairud Polda Bangka Belitung, Kombes Pol Andy Reynold Rumahorbo, S.I.K., M.H, Himaika University of Bangka Belitung, Division Head of North Bangka Area at PT Timah, Benny Pahala Hutahaean, and Division Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at PT Timah, Rahmat Taufik.
Kombes Pol Andy Reynold Rumahorbo explained that the coral reef transplantation was conducted simultaneously across Indonesia to commemorate the 74th anniversary of Polairud.
He stated that the aim of the coral reef transplantation in the waters of Pulau Panjang, Bangka Belitung, was a shared responsibility to restore coral reef conditions and preserve the marine environment of the Bangka Belitung islands.
“We are conducting coral reef transplantation as our shared responsibility to restore the coral reefs in the waters of the Bangka Belitung islands, to preserve the marine ecosystem, which may have been disturbed by mining, overfishing, or other community activities. Once again, it is our collective responsibility to restore the condition of the coral reefs here,” he explained.
Andy mentioned that Pulau Panjang was chosen for the project because it is close to one of PT Timah’s mining concession areas, though not part of the concession, and the location is easily accessible.
“After coordinating and communicating with PT Timah, we found that this area is easily accessible and that the coral reefs' condition has started to deteriorate. So, we decided to start here, and in the future, we will carry out similar activities in other waters,” he added.
“We hope this cooperation improves further, and we can continue to work in synergy and support each other. This is all for the smooth execution of our shared duties for the nation, especially for the people of the Bangka Belitung Islands,” Andy concluded.
Meanwhile, PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that PT Timah continues collaborating with various parties to manage the environment, including preserving the marine ecosystem.
“Sustainable environmental management is one of PT Timah’s commitments in carrying out its business processes. In its implementation, PT Timah collaborates with various parties to manage the environment, as we are doing today with Polairud Polda Babel for coral transplantation in the waters of Pulau Panjang,” said Anggi.
Looking ahead, Anggi hopes the synergy and collaboration with Polairud Polda Babel will continue to grow harmoniously, enabling them to implement other joint activities.
“Environmental management is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate Polairud Polda Babel for carrying out this program with PT Timah,” he concluded. (*)
