Consistently Planting Mangroves is a Real Step for PT Timah Tbk to Support the Realization of Net Zero Emissions

PANGKALPINANG -- Cultivating and planting mangroves is one of the efforts to realize the carbon neutral or net zero emission target by 2060. For this reason, PT Timah Tbk consistently carries out mangrove planting in the company's operational areas.

Mangrove planting carried out by PT Timah Tbk was carried out in Bangka Belitung Province and Riau Islands Province. Efforts to plant mangroves have been underway for a long time. In fact, since 2010 PT Timah Tbk has been planting mangroves with the Ikebana Foundation on Bangka Island.

Apart from planting mangroves, PT Timah Tbk also rehabilitates mangroves with community groups, youth, academics, and fishermen groups. This is an effort to prevent abrasion and protect coastal ecosystems.

PT Timah Tbk planted 44,050 mangrove trees in mid-2016-2022 which were carried out in the company's operational areas. In 2023, members of the MIND ID Mining Industry holding will also plant thousands of mangroves.

In fact, planting mangroves has become a movement to plant goodness. This is one form of sustainable environmental management carried out by the company.

Apart from planting mangroves, PT Timah Tbk is also carrying out a number of concrete actions to support the upcoming NZE 2060 program, such as using renewable energy to support operational activities.

Apart from that, PT Timah Tbk is also trying to increase the intensity and percentage of carbon stock from planting ex-mining land with plant species with high levels of C02 uptake, endemic and fast-growing plants and increasing the intensity and percentage of carbon stock from planting watershed rehabilitation.

PT Timah Tbk's commitment to supporting the realization of NZE and implementing the energy transition was also appreciated by the National Energy Council, where PT Timah Tbk won an award at the 2023 National Energy Council Award in the category of commitment to utilizing Clean Energy.

The community and tin employees always greet this mangrove planting activity enthusiastically. As stated by the Head of Sawang Laut Village, Jefrizal, this mangrove planting site has good potential for mangroves to grow well.

In the future, he said, these mangroves can also help overcome abrasion in the area and will be managed as a new tourist location. The existence of mangroves can also have an economic impact on society, a good mangrove ecosystem can help marine biota to develop well.

"We welcome this step by PT Timah Tbk because this area is surrounded by sea, of course, the planting can withstand sea abrasion and can be used as a new tourist icon. "Moreover, this involves many parties, including the community and fishermen," he said while planting mangroves some time ago.

Likewise, the head of the Jaya Mandiri fishermen group in West Bangka, Kasdi, said that PT Timah Tbk often plants mangroves in their area.

"PT Timah often plants mangroves at this location. Apart from that, in other areas, PT Timah Tbk also involves the community in carrying out similar mangrove planting," he explained. (*)
