Consistently Implementing Tree Planting, PT Timah's Efforts to Achieve Environmental Conservation in Former Mining Areas

PANGKALPINANG - PT Timah remains committed to preserving a sustainable environmental ecosystem, including tree planting in former mining areas.

Environmental conservation through tree planting can create significant positive impacts on the surrounding environment. Therefore, one form of reclamation undertaken by PT Timah is tree planting.

PT Timah's tree planting program is in line with the company's efforts to minimize the environmental impact of its mining activities. Planting trees in former mining areas is not only a land restoration measure but also a long-term investment in environmental sustainability.

In 2023, PT Timah carried out tree planting of various types, including mangroves on coastal areas in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and Riau Islands Province. Tens of thousands of mangrove trees were planted in 2023.

As a member of the Mining Industry Holding MIND ID, PT Timah Tbk also participated in planting sago trees in former mining areas in Kampoeng Reklamasi Air Jangkang alongside the Chief of Presidential Staff (KSP) Moeldoko in August 2023.

Furthermore, PT Timah Tbk was also involved in planting fruit trees in collaboration with Kundur District, Kundur Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

Tree planting in former mining areas helps rehabilitate the areas once used for mining. The trees play a role as soil improvement agents, helping to reduce soil erosion, enhance soil quality, and contribute to biodiversity conservation and carbon absorption.

PT Timah involves the community in tree planting as part of the empowerment initiatives conducted by the company.

The sustainable commitment of PT Timah to tree planting is also appreciated by West Kundur Subdistrict Head Yusufian, who stated that tree planting makes the area greener and more lush.

"This tree planting activity is very good. The seedlings we plant today will be cared for to grow and develop well, providing benefits to the community," he said.

He hopes that the local community will join in planting hundreds of trees and take care of them so that the benefits can be shared.

"We will continue to promote the planting of these fruit trees to reduce dependence on fruit supplies from outside the region to meet the consumption needs of the local community," he added.

The mangrove planting effort by PT Timah is also appreciated by the Head of the West Bangka Environmental Agency, Syafriadi Chandra. Quoted from a previous release, Syafriadi stated that the mangrove planting, conducted in collaboration with the community, brings benefits to the environment.

"With the presence of these mangrove trees, it is very important for the ecosystem within, protecting against coastal abrasion. In addition, mangrove trees absorb CO2 and release oxygen, meaning it is very beneficial for decarbonization, and we highly appreciate PT Timah's ongoing commitment to preserving the environment," he said.
