SOUTH BANGKA -- PT Timah Tbk continues to carry out various environmental management programs, including preserving coastal ecosystems through mangrove planting.
Through its South Bangka Area, PT Timah collaborated with the Limus Hamlet Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) to plant 5,000 Rhizophora mucronata mangrove trees along the coast of Tanjung Labun Beach, Limus Hamlet, Serdang Village, Toboali District, South Bangka Regency (11/6/2025).
In addition to South Bangka, thousands of mangrove trees were planted simultaneously across the Riau Islands Province as part of the World Environment Day celebration, conducted in PT Timah’s operational areas.
As a member of the Indonesian Mining Industry Holding, MIND ID, PT Timah involved various stakeholders in the mangrove planting effort, including local communities, village governments, and fishermen groups.
Chairman of Pokdarwis Limus Hamlet, Dody Syahrial, emphasized the importance of mangrove planting to prevent abrasion and protect the increasingly eroded shoreline.
"The abrasion in this area is quite severe, and this is a smart solution by PT Timah through mangrove planting for rehabilitation. We really appreciate what PT Timah has done to preserve the coastal ecosystem," he said.
He added that coastal rehabilitation through mangrove planting not only helps prevent abrasion but also has the potential to be developed into sustainable tourism and improve local livelihoods.
"In the future, we plan to develop this as a mangrove education tourism site and a preservation center in South Bangka. With mangroves, the ecosystem will be maintained, and it can increase fishermen's catch, which will positively impact the local economy," Dody explained.
Meanwhile, Serdang Village Head, Apendi, said that the mangrove rehabilitation efforts will benefit the community. He hopes similar initiatives can be extended to other coastal areas.
"We thank PT Timah and Pokdarwis. This planting effort not only protects the environment but also adds economic value for the residents. We hope this activity doesn't stop here and can inspire others to care for the coastal ecosystem," said Apendi.
Hotdiman Sianturi, a representative from the Muntai Palas Forest Management Unit (KPHP) in South Bangka, also appreciated PT Timah’s efforts in preserving the coastal area by planting mangroves, which will bring long-term benefits to the community.
"Mangroves play a vital role in preventing abrasion, maintaining ecosystem balance, and improving marine habitats. They also absorb carbon. PT Timah’s planting efforts have not only taken place here but have been done in other areas as well, and we hope this continues," he said.
The mangrove planting was attended by Pokdarwis Chairman Dody Syahrial, Serdang Village Head Apendi, Rias Village Head, representatives from the Muntai Palas Forest Management Unit (KPHP) Hotdiman Sianturi, PT Timah South Bangka Area Division Head Sigit Prabowo, and representatives from the Toboali Police and Military Command.
As part of the World Environment Day commemoration, PT Timah has conducted several activities such as beach clean-ups, tree planting, environmental awareness ceremonies, and education on reducing plastic pollution. These efforts align with the company’s commitment to sustainable business practices and environmental conservation.
