BANGKA — Mangroves play an important role in protecting coastal ecosystems. For this reason, PT TIMAH Tbk continues to carry out sustainable mangrove planting programs within its operational areas in collaboration with the government and community groups.
This time, PT TIMAH Tbk planted 5,000 mangrove seedlings at the Takari Beach area, Rebo Village, Bangka Regency, on Thursday (December 4, 2025). This mangrove planting activity reflects the Company’s commitment to preserving the environment.
The mangrove planting carried out by PT TIMAH Tbk is part of the Company’s sustainability program to strengthen coastal ecosystems while supporting climate change mitigation efforts. PT TIMAH Tbk consistently implements mangrove planting programs in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and Riau Islands Province.
Head of the Sigambir Kotawaringin Production Forest Management Office, Tanaim, expressed his appreciation for PT TIMAH Tbk’s efforts in protecting coastal ecosystems through mangrove planting.
“Thank you to PT TIMAH Tbk for remaining consistent in planting mangroves in the Rebo Protected Forest area. As we know, much of the coastline has been damaged due to human activities. By planting mangroves, we are beginning to restore this area,” he said.
He added that restoring coastal ecosystems through mangrove planting will bring direct benefits to both the community and the environment, even though the results will not be immediate.
“I once planted mangroves in Rambat Menduyung, and today we can see how clams and crabs have returned. This means that an ecosystem that was damaged for years has begun to revive,” he explained.
Going forward, he hopes PT TIMAH Tbk will remain consistent in carrying out mangrove planting and continue collaborating with relevant stakeholders. The planting carried out today will benefit future generations.
“Mangrove planting must be done massively. If we allow the damage to continue unchecked, our coastal ecosystems will deteriorate further. We are ready to collaborate with PT TIMAH Tbk for planting activities. With mangroves, we hope small fish, crabs, and clams can repopulate the area,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Bangka Regency Environmental Agency, Ismir Rahmaddinianto, stated that Bangka faces 127 hectares of potential critical land and 24,240 hectares of critical land. Therefore, mitigation efforts are essential, one of which is through mangrove planting in collaboration with PT TIMAH Tbk.
“The mangrove planting conducted by PT TIMAH Tbk is a continuous effort to support environmental management and protection. Mangroves are also one of the indicators used by local governments to assess environmental sustainability efforts in Bangka. The benefits of mangrove planting are felt by communities, including the increased presence of crabs and shellfish that serve as sources of livelihood, as well as protection from coastal abrasion,” Ismir explained.
To reduce critical land in Bangka, he emphasized that efforts must not stop at planting but should also include ensuring that the mangroves grow properly.
“We thank PT TIMAH Tbk for planting mangroves. We also hope PT TIMAH Tbk can map priority areas for future mangrove planting interventions. PT TIMAH Tbk often plants mangroves with the community, and we expect these efforts to be maintained and supervised so that local residents can continue to safeguard and preserve existing mangroves,” he said.
In addition to planting mangroves, PT TIMAH Tbk also conducts regular monitoring to ensure optimal seedling growth. This step aligns with the Company’s commitment to sustainable environmental management practices.
Mangrove planting serves as the Company’s initiative in coastal rehabilitation, expected to provide long-term ecological and economic benefits. Through ongoing collaboration and commitment, the Company aims to continue contributing to maintaining natural balance and improving environmental quality for future generations. (*)
