KUNDUR -- In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, PT Timah Tbk, through its Division Area Kundur, held a series of environmentally-focused activities.
The events began with a ceremonial gathering, followed by a beach cleanup, tree planting, and a seminar themed “Management of Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3) and Domestic Waste in the Environment,” held at the Wisma Timah Kundur Building on Tuesday, (17/6/2025).
These activities were initiated by the HSE Department of Kundur as part of the company’s commitment to educating employees and the community on the importance of environmentally friendly waste management.
The seminar was attended by representatives from each department of PT Timah’s Kundur Area, local community leaders from Gemuruh Village, and the Provincial Environmental Agency of the Riau Islands.
"Every individual generates waste, so we must also take responsibility for managing it. We hope that with shared commitment and guidance from the Environmental Agency, waste management can become a sustainable collective movement," said PT Timah's Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan.
The seminar featured speakers from the Riau Islands Provincial Environmental Agency. One of them, Axsal, S.K.M., M.Kes., an Environmental Impact Controller Specialist, emphasized that waste has become a serious issue requiring comprehensive handling.
"If not properly managed, especially B3 and domestic waste, it can pollute the environment and harm public health. That’s why the government has issued strict regulations to manage it," explained Axsal.
Echoing this, Rupi’ah, S.P., also from the provincial agency, encouraged all participants to work together to reduce household waste, especially plastic waste commonly used in daily life.
"Each of us is a waste producer, so it’s also our responsibility to reduce it," she said.
The seminar was well-received by Amsir, Head of RT 18 Dusun IV, Gemuruh Village. He found the seminar to be very beneficial in raising public awareness about waste management.
"As a community representative, I fully support this initiative. The establishment of a waste bank is a strategic step to manage waste by type and reduce accumulation that harms environmental health," he stated.
Meanwhile, Astri, representing the PT Timah Employees’ Wives Association (IIKT), also saw the seminar as relevant and important.
"Household waste management around the PT Timah complex should involve the community to be more effective and bring added value," she said.
