PANGKALPINANG – PT Timah continues to commit to sustainable mining practices, with a strong focus on environmental management. As part of this effort, the company is actively involved in addressing the issue of degraded lands in the Bangka Belitung Islands, where the extent of such areas continues to grow.
One of PT Timah's key initiatives in managing degraded lands is through the promotion of tree planting and the sustainable management of post-mining lands. Recently, in celebration of the company’s 48th anniversary, PT Timah launched a campaign to plant 48,000 trees across its operational areas. The tree species planted include mangroves, local trees, and various fruit-bearing plants.
In executing this program, PT Timah collaborates with various stakeholders, including local governments, communities, and youth groups. Through this collaborative approach, it is hoped that the rehabilitation of degraded lands can be accelerated and become more effective.
In addition to tree planting, PT Timah consistently undertakes land reclamation efforts on its former mining sites. Between 2015 and 2023, PT Timah reclaimed a total of 3,183.01 hectares of land across Bangka, West Bangka, Central Bangka, South Bangka, Belitung, East Belitung, and the company’s inter-county mining permits (IUP).
Anggi Siahaan, Head of Corporate Communications at PT Timah, highlighted that the company’s tree planting initiative aligns with its broader efforts to minimize the environmental impacts of its mining operations.
"Tree planting is just one of the many environmental programs implemented by PT Timah as part of its commitment to preserving nature. The company is determined to continue contributing to environmental conservation efforts through sustainable initiatives, including the rehabilitation of degraded lands and other environmental projects," said Anggi.
