BANGKA BARAT -- PT Timah Tbk continues to strengthen its collaboration with the education sector. Recently, this member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding welcomed an industrial visit from a group of lecturers and postgraduate (Master’s and Doctoral) students from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
The visit aimed to observe firsthand the business operations and tin processing activities at PT Timah Tbk. One of the main sites visited was the Processing and Refinery Division on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The group was welcomed by the Sub Division Head of Processing and Refinery, Kopdi Saragih, who gave a presentation on PT Timah’s tin processing and refining procedures.
Following the presentation, a discussion and Q&A session took place, which was then followed by a field visit to the operational area, guided by the team from the Processing and Refinery Division.
Dr. Muhammad Nur Heriawan, a lecturer from ITB, explained that the visit was driven by the academic interest in the unique tin mining processes carried out by PT Timah.
“PT Timah is the only tin mining company in Indonesia, and possibly in Southeast Asia, that remains active and is the largest. Another unique aspect is that PT Timah conducts both alluvial and primary mining, onshore and offshore, which is very rare,” he explained.
He also highlighted the significant potential PT Timah can further explore, especially in optimizing residual materials from the processing stage that still contain fine tin and other valuable minerals.
“The challenge going forward is how exploration, mining, and processing can become more efficient in optimizing fine materials from processing residues so they still hold economic value,” he added.
This visit exemplifies the collaboration between the industrial and academic sectors to deepen understanding and jointly seek sustainable solutions for the future of the tin industry.
