Collaborating with the Community to Protect Coastal Ecosystems, PT Timah Tbk Plants 12,000 Mangrove Seedlings in Kundur

KARIMUN – In an effort to support ecosystem sustainability and environmental conservation, PT Timah continues to implement various integrated environmental management programs.

This initiative serves as part of the company's social and environmental responsibility to maintain a sustainable ecosystem.

One of PT Timah's key environmental management programs is marine reclamation, which is carried out in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and Riau Province.

Marine reclamation efforts in Riau Province include mangrove planting, crab restocking, installing erosion barriers, and monitoring marine life in the company's operational areas.

At the beginning of 2025, PT Timah Tbk's Kundur Area successfully planted 12,000 mangrove seedlings of the bakauspecies at four locations: Mata Air Beach in Kundur Village, Teluk Dalam Beach in Kundur Village, Gemuruh Beach in Gemuruh Village, West Kundur District, and Pongkar Beach in Pongkar Village, Tebing District, Karimun Regency.

Mangrove planting aims to reduce coastal erosion, which has become increasingly concerning each year.

In carrying out this initiative, PT Timah involves local communities as a collaborative effort to protect the coastal ecosystem.

Dedi, one of the residents participating in the mangrove planting, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, highlighting both its environmental and economic benefits.

"I’m happy that PT Timah continues to plant mangroves around Kundur Island because it has a positive impact on both fishermen and the wider community," he said.

Similarly, Khomari, a resident of Gemuruh Village who also took part in the planting, emphasized the importance of this initiative for coastal ecosystem sustainability.

"The mangrove forest serves as a breeding ground for marine life such as shrimp, small fish, and crabs. It also helps absorb strong waves, reducing coastal erosion," he explained. (*)
