BANGKA BARAT — PT Timah's reclamation efforts on former mining land not only aim to restore the land’s ecological function but also provide significant economic benefits to the surrounding communities. A prime example is PT Timah’s collaboration with the Air Limau Village Government in Mentok District, West Bangka Regency.
Through this partnership, PT Timah and the Air Limau Village Government have transformed former mining land into a productive oil palm plantation, expected to contribute to the village’s revenue (APBDes).
As a member of the Mining Industry Holding MIND ID, PT Timah has provided seedlings, fertilizers, and maintenance support while involving local communities in rehabilitating the land.
By managing reclaimed mining land through this collaboration, the initiative is expected to open up opportunities for local economic development, including through the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes).
Air Limau Village Head, Mexsi Diansah, stated that PT Timah’s reclamation program in their village has begun to yield positive results.
“The 7.04-hectare land, previously an ex-mining area, has been revitalized with organic enrichment. Now, it has turned into a green plantation with oil palm trees that are ready for harvest and are productive,” he explained.
He credited the success of this project to the support and guidance provided by PT Timah Tbk.
“The choice of oil palm was driven by the Village Government’s vision to ensure that what is cultivated generates economic value for the village’s original revenue. Our goal is for Air Limau Village to no longer be dependent on central government funding. The reclamation conducted by PT Timah has turned into a productive income source,” he added.
Mexsi also noted that his village has many untapped potentials and hopes that PT Timah will continue to support their development efforts.
“We still have many unutilized former mining pits (kolong). If repurposed, they could empower the community, such as for fish farming. We hope PT Timah will support us in transforming these areas as well,” he expressed.
He also appreciated PT Timah’s programs, which have brought tangible benefits to the community.
“PT Timah’s contributions and social responsibility programs have been truly felt by the villagers. Besides land reclamation, the company has also initiated cultural programs like ‘Budaya Menawam’ and provided various social assistance programs. We sincerely thank PT Timah,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, the Chairman of the Air Limau Village Consultative Body (BPD), Imam, praised PT Timah’s reclamation program for its economic impact on the local community.
“PT Timah’s reclamation program in Air Limau is excellent. If the oil palm plantation is well maintained until harvest, it will provide employment opportunities for local residents. We hope this program continues,” he stated. (*)
