Boosting Literacy Through Popular Scientific Writing, Dozens of Teachers in West Bangka Enthusiastically Join the Timah Mengajar Program

WEST BANGKA -- PT Timah Tbk continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting education in its operational areas through the Timah Mengajar (Timah Teaching) program. This initiative is part of the company's efforts to improve the quality of human resources in mining communities.

The Timah Mengajar program includes various activities, such as "Improving Teacher Competence Through Popular Scientific Writing as a Form of Professional Development in 2025 in West Bangka Regency."

Held from June 11–13, 2025, at Wisma Timah Sriwijaya in Mentok, West Bangka Regency, the event was enthusiastically welcomed by participants, who included teachers from elementary to high school/vocational school levels. The training aims to encourage educators to actively write popular scientific articles.

One participant, Diki, a teacher at SDN 5 Jebus, said the Timah Mengajar program was very engaging and relevant to implement in schools.

"The material was very useful. We gained new insights into how to write proper and effective popular scientific articles. We will apply this knowledge in our teaching process and share it with fellow teachers," he said.

Similarly, Helen Moriska, a teacher at SDN 5 Parittiga, said she gained a lot of new knowledge during the three-day program.

"Alhamdulillah, we learned a lot about literacy. In the future, we plan to submit our works to local and national media. Hopefully, this program won’t stop here and can reach even more communities," she explained.

Meanwhile, Alias, a teacher at SDN 19 Tempilang, said he plans to implement what he learned with his students.

"Initially, we didn’t really understand how to write popular scientific articles. Thanks to this program, we are more motivated. We hope PT Timah continues to provide similar training in other areas of education," he said.

Ermawati, a teacher at SDN 10 Jebus, also said that the program was a valuable opportunity for teacher development.

"We now understand the importance of writing popular scientific articles. Hopefully, through this training, we can contribute our opinions and ideas for the advancement of West Bangka," she said.

The program coordinator, Derry Nodyanto, stated that Timah Mengajar is a program that delivers real impact.

"What PT Timah is doing not only benefits the company, but also brings new energy to teachers, education departments, literacy communities, and of course, future generations," he said.

Derry added that the outcomes of the program would be compiled into a collection of popular scientific opinions and literacy-themed poems.

"The output of this activity will be documented in a book that will be distributed to the public. This is a first step toward a stronger literacy ecosystem," he concluded.

The program concluded with awards given to the most active participants and the most creative entries in the photo and video competition on social media.
