Beyond Mining, PT TIMAH Restocks 1,000 Mangrove Crabs in Kundur

KUNDUR -- PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk continues its efforts to preserve coastal ecosystems across its operational areas. This time, through its Kundur Area Division, PT TIMAH once again restocked 1,000 juvenile mangrove crabs in the waters around Kundur, Riau Islands, on Wednesday (September 16, 2026).

In carrying out the mangrove crab restocking program, PT TIMAH collaborated with the Gemuruh Village Government and the local community. The release of juvenile mangrove crabs is part of the company’s efforts to support the sustainability of coastal ecosystems while maintaining populations of marine species that hold both ecological and economic value for local communities.

As a member of the MIND ID Mining Industry Holding, PT TIMAH implements marine reclamation programs through various activities aimed at supporting environmental restoration and sustainability.

Mangrove crab restocking is one of the initiatives undertaken to help maintain the balance of coastal ecosystems, particularly amid the declining natural population of mangrove crabs. The program has been carried out for several years.

Idris, a fisherman from Gemuruh Village, welcomed PT TIMAH’s latest restocking initiative. He said the release of juvenile mangrove crabs could help preserve the environment while increasing the crab population in the waters surrounding the village.

“This activity is part of an effort to preserve nature and the environment, so we, as members of the fishing community, strongly support it,” he said.

Idris explained that mangrove crabs have relatively high economic value, meaning that maintaining a sustainable population could potentially benefit the livelihoods of coastal communities.

He said local fishermen have begun to see the benefits of similar initiatives carried out previously. While fishing, they have increasingly encountered crabs of relatively large sizes.

“Some time ago, we began to see the impact of this program. When we go out to sea, we now frequently find crabs that are quite large and also have good economic value,” he said.

He hopes the newly released juvenile crabs will grow and reproduce successfully so that the benefits can be felt by the community over the long term.

“We may see the results of this activity several years from now. Hopefully, the juvenile crabs we released can survive and reproduce well, ultimately bringing positive benefits to fishermen in the surrounding area,” he said.

The mangrove crab restocking program is expected not only to help preserve coastal species but also to support the sustainability of marine resources that play an important role in the lives and livelihoods of Kundur’s coastal communities. (*)
