PANGKALPINANG — As part of its commitment to marine environmental conservation, PT Timah has consistently carried out the deployment of artificial reefs as part of the company's marine reclamation efforts.
The deployment of artificial reefs is conducted in PT Timah’s operational areas. This program is part of the company's initiative to support the restoration of marine ecosystems.
PT Timah has submerged thousands of artificial reefs across the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. Between 2016 and 2024, the company has deployed 7,680 units of artificial reefs. During the same period, PT Timah also deployed 3,105 fish shelters and 1,475 coral transplantation units.
The artificial reefs are designed to resemble natural coral structures and are placed on the seabed in hopes of becoming new habitats for marine life.
The reef deployment is carried out gradually, involving various stakeholders such as local governments, fishing communities, and academic institutions.
PT Timah’s Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that the artificial reef deployment reflects the company’s efforts to balance operational activities with environmental conservation.
“Through marine reclamation, particularly the deployment of artificial reefs, the company strives to ensure that marine ecosystems remain productive and can be sustainably utilized by coastal communities,” said Anggi.
In addition to restoring fish habitats, the deployment of artificial reefs is expected to promote the growth of conservation-based marine tourism in the future.
This program has been running for several years and continues to be developed sustainably. The company also conducts regular monitoring of the effectiveness of the artificial reefs, including natural coral growth and the presence of fish species around the deployment areas.
Anggi added that in addition to artificial reef deployment, PT Timah’s marine reclamation programs also include squid restocking, mangrove planting, installation of abrasion barriers, and other initiatives.(*)
